The other week when I was at my chemo appointment, I asked my oncologist to write me a script to get a mammogram.
Me: I need a script for a mammogram.
Onc: Why?
Me: It’s that time and I don’t have another doctor to write it.
Onc: Well you don’t need to get one.
Me: I don’t?
Onc: Not unless you want reassurance or something.
Me: Would you get a mammogram?
Onc: (pauses) … Well, I’ve gotten them.
Me: Is it possible to get another cancer at the same time?
Onc: Sure it’s possible but
Me: What does that mean?
Onc: Well I don’t know that we’d treat it.
Mother: What do you mean?
Onc: If you want to get one for your peace of mind but at this point, I don’t think it’s necessary.
Needless to say, I guess I’ll also cancel my yearly pap too.
